How much does a new boiler cost?

How much a new boiler costs will always depend on the type, make and model of boiler you choose. The size of the boiler and the complexity of the installation process can also affect the cost of replacing and installing a new boiler. For example, you may decide to relocate your boiler, or switch from one system type to another.

How to estimate the cost of a new boiler installation

At HomeServe, we aim to offer first-class installations of top boiler brands, such as Worcester Bosch and Ideal, at competitive prices.

Our price estimator tool can give you a good idea of what you might pay for a new boiler, as well as any new boiler deals we many have, while a survey conducted by one of our Home Experts will help establish a clear, all-inclusive price for a solution that’s designed especially for you.

Our bespoke quotations include all parts and labour, plus a Sentinel vortex filler, a horizontal flue, a system cleanse and the removal of your old boiler. We also provide customers with a new programmer and thermostat, if needed.

Can I spread the payments for a new boiler over time?

Yes, we offer a range of finance options—including interest free and long-term, low rate deals—to help make buying a new boiler more affordable.

Why buy a new boiler?

When it comes to buying a new boiler, there are lots of reasons why you might feel now is the time to replace your existing one.

Faults and failures

Boiler breakdown can cause costly repairs, so you might consider investing in a new one. Boilers tend to last between 10 and 15 years, so if yours seems to be slowing down, replacing it with a new one could prove more cost effective.

Heating and hot water problems

Many homeowners decide to opt for a boiler replacement if it’s struggling to meet their heating and hot water needs. If you use a lot of hot water—and/or if you use your heating a lot—a boiler with a high kW output might be best for you. You can count on our Home Experts to help you decide what’s right for your household.

Energy efficiency

If your boiler has a low energy efficiency rating, it’s likely your energy bills are higher than they would be if you installed a new, A-rated heating system in your home. Energy efficient boilers can help reduce heating bills, as well as protect the environment.

It’s beyond economical repair (BER)

In some cases, it can be more cost-effective to replace your boiler than to organise for it to be repaired. For example, if you have an old boiler that is prone to faults, instead of constantly paying to get it repaired, you could invest in a brand-new boiler system.

You want to move the system

If you’re unhappy with the location that your boiler is in, installing a brand-new boiler could be more worthwhile. It could also potentially be less-hassle as you’ll have the option to upgrade your system and get a more energy-efficient source of central heating.

Current system fails to meet your needs

Many homeowners opt for a boiler replacement if they find that their current system struggles to meet their heating and hot-water needs. For example, a homeowner whose property has high hot-water and heating demands may choose to install a boiler with a higher kW output.

Selling/renting your property – A house with a new boiler fitted could be more appealing to buyers and tenants than a home with an older and potentially less energy-efficient system. It could therefore be beneficial for you to invest in a boiler if you plan on selling your home, as this could enhance buyer/tenant interest.

What type of boiler should I choose?

There are three main types of boiler systems to choose from. Deciding which one to install depends on the size of your home, its features and how much water you're likely to use.

Combi boilers

  • Compact size; good choice for smaller properties
  • No loft space needed in your home
  • Less pipework required which typically makes the installation cheaper – unless undergoing a system swap
  • Provides a constant flow of hot water from the mains

Read more about Combi boilers

System boilers

  • Typically suitable for homes with more than one bathroom
  • Doesn't need a loft tank, which saves space
  • No feed or expansion cistern makes them more efficient
  • Offer a constant supply of hot water to any number of taps

Read more about System boilers

Conventional boilers

  • A typically great choice for homes where a lot of hot water is used at the same time
  • Typically suitable for large households with two or more bathrooms
  • Requires a cold water storage tank in the loft as well as a hot water tank

What size boiler do I need?

When engineers talk about a boiler’s ‘size’, what they’re really referring to is its energy output. This is measured in kilowatts (kW).

The higher a boiler’s energy output, the more easily it will cope with your household’s demands for heating and hot water. Therefore, the more rooms, bathrooms and radiators your property has, the higher your boiler’s energy output should be.

The table below is a rough guide to the energy output you should look for in a boiler, depending on the features of your home.

24-27kW 1-2 bedroom, 10 radiators, 1 bathroom
28-34kW 3-4 bedroom, 15 radiators, 1-2 bathroom
35-42kW 4+ bedroom, 20 radiators, 2+ bathroom

Does a new boiler need to be energy-efficient?

An energy-efficient boiler can save you money on your energy bills by lowering your energy wastage**. All boilers HomeServe stock are A-rated for efficiency and could be coupled with a state of the art thermostat (such as Nest or Netatmo) to potentially provide you with the ultimate energy-efficient, central heating system. Boilers such as our Worcester Bosch Greenstar 30i are A-rated for efficiency and could be coupled with a state of the art thermostat to potentially provide you with the ultimate energy-efficient, central heating system.

According to the Energy savings Trust, replacing a G-rated boiler in a semi-detached property with an A-rated boiler could save you up to £210 on your annual energy bill!**

Can I move my boiler to a new location?

Yes—it’s often possible to move a boiler from one location to another, and you might want to do so for practical or aesthetic reasons. However, it might save you time and money to place your new boiler in the same location as your old one, as this usually enables a quick and easy installation.

If you book a survey with one of our Home Experts, they will be able to help you assess whether moving your boiler is the right decision for you.

How long will it take to install a new boiler?

It should take between one and five days to install a new boiler at your home, depending on the work that’s required.
If you switch from one type of heating system to another, the installation might be more complicated and time consuming. For instance, moving from a regular boiler to a combi boiler is likely to take longer than a simple combi to combi swap.

While your new boiler installation is underway, you’ll be without your usual heating and hot water—so it’s important to get an idea of how long the process will take upfront. If you book a survey with one of our Home Experts, they should be able to advise you on how complex and lengthy a process your new boiler installation might be, so you can plan accordingly.

With HomeServe, you can rest assured that your new boiler installation will be completed as quickly and efficiently as possible. We’re committed to getting every customer’s heating and hot water up and running as soon as we can.

When's the right time to get a new boiler?

On average, boilers last between 10 and 15 years. So, if your boiler is coming up to this age, it may be time for you to consider getting a new one installed. Besides their age, there are a number of other reasons for replacing your old boiler system. This could include:

  • Beyond economical repair (BER) – In some cases, it can be more cost-effective to replace your boiler than to organise for it to be repaired. For example, if you have an old boiler that is prone to faults, instead of constantly paying to get it repaired, you could invest in a brand-new boiler system.
  • Moving the system – If you’re unhappy with the location that your boiler is in, installing a brand-new boiler could be more worthwhile. It could also potentially be less-hassle as you’ll have the option to upgrade your system and get a more energy-efficient source of central heating.
  • Current system fails to meet your needs – Many homeowners opt for a boiler replacement if they find that their current system struggles to meet their heating and hot-water needs. For example, a homeowner whose property has high hot-water and heating demands may choose to install a boiler with a higher kW output.
  • Low energy-efficiency rating – Boilers with low energy-efficiency ratings could cause higher energy bills. It could therefore be beneficial for homeowners with low-efficiency boiler systems to invest in a system that has higher levels of energy-efficiency, as this could enable more savings!** The UK government is keen to promote the installation of A-rated energy-efficient boilers, in order to increase savings as well as protect the environment. Read more about some of the government’s schemes for energy-efficiency here.
  • Selling/renting your property – A house with a new boiler fitted could be more appealing to buyers and tenants than a home with an older and potentially less energy-efficient system. It could therefore be beneficial for you to invest in a boiler if you plan on selling your home, as this could enhance buyer/tenant interest.
